Can DTEA II formula be used with glutaraldehyde?

Yes ….. but with the following proviso; before using DTEA II with glutaraldehyde, treat a sample of an actual “working”  water (1- Freshly treated with glut; 2-Recycled or “aged” water direct from the system; 3-“Spent” or no detected levels of glut” water; 4-Any other similar water samples) with not more than 200 ppm DTEA II 15% product or equivalent (not more than 30 ppm active)  before proceeding to use DTEA II with glut in any system. Check these treated samples for any incompatibility that you feel would affect system performance.

Cooling towers, closed loop systems, and related:

In some cases where there are abnormally high levels of iron corrosion products and use levels of exceed 15 ppm active (100 ppm 15% product), a pink coloration of the residue can result.  In cases where a pink coloration is problematic or in any way viewed as undesirable, do not use DTEA II in the presence of glutaraldehyde.

Oil field:  The use of glutaraldehyde and DTEA II is recommended and is in use today in select oil fields in the USA.

Historically, many customers have found that when using glutaraldehyde in high organic load systems (especially in oil refineries), the addition of DTEA II has resulted in minimal usage of glut.  More importantly, this allows glut usage to remain at the lower recommended usage levels.   In practice,  the effective use levels of glut appear to creep up from that recommended to higher and higher levels. When an organic fouling condition or out of control situation develops (not uncommon) in a glut program, DTEA II allows system recovery and use of glut at the original lower recommended levels. However, as we had 3 reports in early 2000 from 3 different customers who had a pink coloration develop when glut and DTEA II were used together and it was undesirable, we established a “do not use DTEA II with glut” policy.  However, as we have customers who use DTEA II with glut in cooling towers as a basic program and with great success, we helped other such customers use this combination on a case-by-case basis. In oil field applications, the use of DTEA II has been recommended and used with excellent results.  We have made the “how to use glut/DTEA II” information available on case-by-case basis to customers who, in our judgment would derive significant benefit in both performance and cost savings, especially in oil field use while maintaining a general position of “do not use with glut” for customers who would not necessarily derive great benefit.
